St Benedict’s College celebrates all-rounder Charlton Chung, who clinched the school’s Overall Dux Award with 10 distinctions, 91% average… along with national sporting glory.
A total of 10 distinctions and an overall average of 91% – these numbers only begin to tell the story of Charlton Chung’s remarkable Class of 2025 journey at St Benedict’s College. An overachiever who is hardworking, consistent, confident, and light-hearted, Charlton’s excellence spans three distinct arenas: academics, sport, and culture, culminating in the college’s highest honour – the Overall Dux Award.
Academic Excellence in Context
Charlton’s achievements come as part of a historic milestone for St Benedict’s College, which proudly celebrates its 50th year of a 100% pass rate. The Class of 2025 produced an outstanding 337 distinctions across 124 learners, translating to a record-breaking distinction ratio of 2.72 distinctions per matriculant – the highest in the school’s recent history. The class attained an impressive overall average of 73.7% (B), with 99% qualifying for University Entrance (Bachelor Degree) passes.
As a Catholic school that prides itself on academic excellence, St Benedict’s ranks highly amongst IEB schools, with 14 subjects exceeding the IEB national subject averages (including Further Studies subjects). This year, four students featured on the IEB Outstanding Achievers’ List, three on the IEB Commendable Achievers’ List, and 10 were listed among the top 1% national achievers within a subject.
Breadth and Consistency Across the Board
Charlton’s academic results demonstrate exceptional breadth and consistency. His 98% in Mathematics stands as the pinnacle, supported by 92% in both Geography and Further Studies Mathematics (Calculus), 92% in Physical Sciences, and 90% in both Life Orientation and Life Sciences. His 89% in Afrikaans confirms why he earned the College Bilingualism Award, while his 86% in English and performance across Further Studies English (84%) and Music (72%) showcase versatility across sciences, mathematics, humanities, languages, and the arts.
Chung earned top 1% national recognition in both Geography and Mathematics and featured on the IEB Commendable Achievers List (Top 5% nationally in five subjects and a distinction in Life Orientation).
Powerlifting Glory on the International Stage
But it’s in powerlifting where Charlton has achieved something truly extraordinary. As African Champion and South African Champion with National colours, he has represented his country on international stages – a rare achievement for any high school athlete. This wasn’t a distraction from academics but rather complementary to it, as his Academic Dux Bronze recognises him as third highest academically in his grade. The Overall Dux Award – the Trophy and Gold Medal – acknowledges this unique combination of academic excellence and sporting achievement at the highest levels.
“These results are the product of a powerful partnership between our dedicated boys, supportive and engaged parents, and a passionate, nurturing teaching staff who consistently go above and beyond in their calling,” says College Head Dave Jeffrey. “The Class of 2025 has already demonstrated exceptional resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges. You adapted when the world changed, you persevered when uncertainty prevailed, and you have emerged stronger.”
Leadership that Inspires
As Leader and Head of Erasme House, Charlton managed and oversaw all academics, activities, and behaviour within the schoolhouse. His responsibilities included implementing new systems, writing line-up documents, attending to parents and guests, and ensuring the legacy of the Class of 2025 would endure for future generations. His leadership required not just authority but the ability to inspire peers who recognised his achievements across multiple domains.

Cultural Excellence Adds Another Dimension
Cultural excellence added another dimension to Charlton’s profile. The Franks Cultural Trophy – awarded for earning the most points in cultural activities in 2025 and demonstrating unsurpassed commitment to the college’s cultural life – recognised his involvement in chess, College Band, and Pipe Band (where he earned Full Colours). His Chess Full Colours and designation as Chess Player of the Year, combined with Music Half Colours, confirm that his talents extend well beyond the weight room and classroom.
A Trophy Cabinet of Achievements
Charlton’s academic prowess earned him the Soderlund Cup for Mathematics as the top mathematics student, along with the Golden Ratio Certificate for distinctions across Mathematics, Further Studies Mathematics, and Physical Science. Senior Academic Full Colours recognised his 75%+ average across all subjects.

From Powerlifting Champion to Future Physician
Charlton will pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at UCT before likely transferring overseas to continue his medical studies. From powerlifting champion to future physician – the transition may seem dramatic, but both require discipline, precision, understanding of human physiology, and the mental fortitude to perform under pressure. The strength he built in the gym, the analytical skills he honed in mathematics and sciences, and the empathy he demonstrated in leadership all converge in his chosen path toward medicine.
This career choice is a path perfectly suited to his analytical mind, dedication to excellence, and commitment to making a meaningful impact.
“As you embark on this exciting new chapter, we send you forth, our young trailblazers, with a reminder to lead with integrity, pursue knowledge with curiosity, and carry the values of our school into all that you do,” says Jeffrey. “We are confident that the Class of 2025 will continue this legacy. You possess the essential qualities needed to excel in all areas of life and to make meaningful contributions to your communities, society, and the world at large.”
